100 Day Project: Universal Pictograms
100 Day Project: Universal Pictograms
NO LETTERS OR NUMBERS. JUST SYMBOLS EVERYONE CAN UNDERSTAND.
Is it possible?
By The Numbers
-
100 Pictograms
One pictogram a day for 100 days.
-
230 Hours of Research
Each pictogram required at least an hour of research. The longest one took three.
-
14 Categories
For every week in the project, there was a specific category.
Process
Every pictogram followed a set of rules. It couldnβt have any numbers or letters or any color besides black and white. It also had to be a universal symbol for what it stood for.
Step 2: Research
The second step was to do research to figure out how to represent said idea in a way people could understand. Cleaning for example is something people do all over the world. However, it is not something everybody does the same. After doing research, I came to the conclusion that a broom is the best way to represent cleaning because it is a very common tool used across many different cultures for cleaning.
Step 3: Illustration
The final step was to Illustrate what I wanted. This was the shortest step as the goal of the project was to make things as simple as they could be.
Step 1: Ideation
The first step was to think about something that would make sense to have a pictograph for.
For example: cleaning

FOR EVERY CATEGORY, I SPENT TIME RESEARCHING AND UNDERSTANDING THE INS AND OUTS OF THE IDEA I WAS DESIGNING FOR. TAKE TIME FOR EXAMPLE. I LEARNED THE DEFINITION OF A SECOND IS:
The second is defined by taking the fixed numerical value of the caesium frequency, ΞΞ½Cs, the unperturbed ground-state hyperfine transition frequency of the caesium 133 atom, to be 9192631770 when expressed in the unit Hz, which is equal to sβ1
TO YOU, THIS MIGHT SEEM LIKE A RABBIT HOLE, BUT TO ME, SOLID RESEARCH MAKES GREAT DESIGN.
